My Ultimate Journey from Tourist to Traveler: The joys of slow travel
In today’s post, I decided to share a real story, My story!
Hi, I’m Skai, the author of the posts on this blog. I’m in my late thirties, and I’ve been fortunate enough to explore over 15 countries across 4 continents. But my travel journey hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Let me take you on a trip down memory lane, sharing how my approach to travel has evolved over the years from a frantic race through tourist hotspots to a more meaningful, relaxed exploration of new places and cultures.
The Early Years: The Checklist Phase
Back in my twenties and early thirties, travel was synonymous with checklists. Armed with guidebooks and meticulously planned itineraries, I dashed from one must-see attraction to another, determined to cram as much as possible into each trip. Paris? Must see the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, and Notre-Dame in one day. Rome? Vatican, Colosseum, and Trevi Fountain, all before lunch. I could fit a whole road trip across Turkey in one week. It was exhilarating, but also exhausting. My trips felt more like marathons than vacations.
The Turning Point: A Year Abroad
Everything changed when I had the incredible opportunity to live abroad for a year. Settling in a foreign country allowed me to immerse myself in the local culture in a way that short vacations never could. I learned the language, made friends with locals, and started to appreciate the subtleties of everyday life; where a mondain trip to the store for a late snack, a walk to the near park or an acquaintance with the neighbors were real experiences. It wasn’t just about seeing the sights anymore; it was about experiencing life as the locals did. This was a game-changer.
Embracing Slow Travel: The New Approach
After my year abroad, I couldn’t go back to my old ways. I realized that I was missing out on the true essence of travel by rushing through it. Now, I plan my trips with a focus on slow travel and meaningful experiences. Instead of a whirlwind tour of Europe, I might spend a week in a small Italian village, getting to know the people and the culture. Here’s how myapproach has shifted:
The Joy of Slow Travel
Slowing down has made my travels infinitely more enjoyable and less stressful. I’ve found that there’s a unique joy in taking my time to truly experience a place. Instead of racing against the clock, I savor the moments – a leisurely breakfast at a local café, a peaceful walk through a park, or simply sitting and watching the world go by.
Travel is no longer just about the destinations I visit; it’s about the journey and the experiences along the way. By embracing slow travel, I’ve rediscovered my love for exploring new places and cultures in a way that feels authentic and fulfilling.

Happy travels, everyone!
